Atama Australia - Brazilian-Made BJJ Gis

Atama has been a fixture on the mats since the early days of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and it's one of the brands that helped define what a modern BJJ gi should be. Made in Brazil with a traditional cut and minimal branding, an Atama gi is built as a plain canvas for your academy patches and your own rank. It's gear for people who train often and want something that lasts, rather than something that looks loud for a season.

The Atama Gi Range

The lineup is deliberately simple, with three models covering most needs. The Rookie is the lightest, built on a single weave that breathes well and dries fast, which makes it a strong first gi and the obvious pick for training through an Australian summer or packing for travel. The Classic is the daily workhorse, a mid-weight pearl weave that balances durability against comfort and handles four or more sessions a week without complaint. The Collab 2.0 is the competition model, with a denser weave that's harder for opponents to grip, a stiff vulcanised collar that resists sweat, and a tapered cut that leaves less loose material to work with. All three are available in white and black.

Atama Sizing and Shrinkage

Atama uses the standard A-scale, but the cut runs more traditional than the slim-fit gis that have become common, with more room through the chest and shoulders. The cotton isn't pre-shrunk, so expect around 3–5% shrinkage over the first few hot washes, mostly in sleeve and pant length. If you're between sizes, size up and shrink down rather than buying tight. To keep shrinkage minimal once you've got the fit right, wash cold and hang dry, and save the dryer for when you actually want to bring a gi in. Our gi sizing guide covers this in more detail.

Built to Last

Reinforced stitching at the armpits, knees and jacket splits is what separates a gi that survives years of hard rolling from one that opens up after a season. Atama's heavier competition models run dense weaves that resist both ripping and gripping, and the cotton softens as it breaks in without losing its structure. Training several times a week, a Classic will realistically outlast two or three entry-level gis, which is where the price starts to make sense.
